my views are that neither should matter. but they do. in our society, you are looked at differently or thought of differently based on your gender or ethnicity. we try to say we are not stereotypical and that we dont judge but lets face it, we do, everyone judges people to some extent and the majority of the time it is based on their gender or ethnicity

Sociology has really three major perspectives: rational choice, structural and cultural.
Ethnicity and gender is really not discussed in the rational choice view, outside of occasional exploration into their effects on preferences and framing of decisions.
Gender is examined in literature streams such as radical feminism through structural: meaning that institutions and established behaviors in a social system lead to differences in behaviors and choices that women and men can make. Cultural views it through the idea that there are differences in cultures with respect to what women and men are.
Ethnicity is usually treated as the moderator for dependent variables, but over the past 20 years has been a little more seen as an independent variable within a given cultural or structural perspective.
