how do I download safely. Any advice on where the best free, safe sites to get these and also where to download them to and what it takes to actually run it. I thought this was a simple conversion, but it seems I need some kind of packager program. Is this correct?

You can just download them.
Go to http://www.icongalore.com and http://www.desktopicons.co.uk and you can just download them to your hard drive.
Then just right click on the icon you want to change, go to Properties, and use the CHANGE ICON method.
Or you can even create your own icons. Make little jpg or gif pictures and then go to http://www.download.com and download a program that will convert your jpgs or gifs to an .ico format and you can use those instead.

If you want to download something big it cant be saifty if its small than it doesnt have virus!~!
