Good looking or handsome are the correct English terms.
Pretty is reserved for females.

Sounds like a language barrier.

You might find this interesting, a true story.

Many years ago, a trade representative from Thailand came to the US. His English was limited.
He was taken to visit the Los Angeles Zoo. In referring to the elephants he remarked that they had such rough and tough "skin", his only knowledge for the term.

He was corrected and given the correct word, "hyde".

Later on he was in Chicago at a formal ball.
He danced with a young lady and made this remark.
"You have a beautiful "hyde".

Language, huh?

Because men are not allowed to make observations about other people's looks unless they are ogling women. There are a lot of unwritten rules that men have to follow lest they be judged less "manly". I think it has to do with the basic insecurity that men all have, and anything to make someone else seem like less of a man makes them feel more like a man. Whatever that means.

Men are competitive and don't like to acknowledge each others good looks in speech. Men don't tell people they are good looking unless they want to court someone or they want to encourage them.

Since men are competitive, they don't like to encourage each other. So the only other reason would be to court that person. Men who aren't gay don't want to be thought of as gay because it's a major insult. Therefore, they don't tell other men they are pretty.

When I say men, I'm speaking of the traditional role. These new metrosexuals obviously don't fit that description.

It's a pretty gay thing to say.

A man can appreciate that another man is attractive - that is ok - as long he doesn't go on about it.

To say he is pretty implies he is attracted to him.

Because it's not 'normal' for one man to describe another man as 'pretty'.
Normally a man would comment and say that another man is 'handsome'.

I don't know many straight guys that would refer to another guy as 'pretty'. He may admit the guy is good looking, but for a man to say 'pretty'. Dunno about that one.
