"Competitive salary" is a phrase used to avoid scaring off job applicants because of the pay. What they're offering may, or may not, be as much as you're making now, or as much as other people in the field are making. "Competitive" is a relative term and can be interpreted any way either of you wants. For example, to you, "competitive" might mean at the high end of the pay scale, so as to attract the most applicants. To the employer, "competitive" might mean at the low end of the pay scale, so as to attract a qualified applicant who will work for the least pay.

Basically, "competitive salary" means they don't want to put the salary in the ad.

It means they have salaries similar to companies with jobs like the one you are looking at--and they are aware that qualified people are looking at other companies too. It might mean they are negotiable on the salary for a highly qualified person.

This would be opposed to a company that pays minimum wage, take it or leave it.
