Two-step method:
1. Write down thoughts that come into your head, when you are feeling something emotionally, that are honest, concise and unique. You may feel the urge to embellish the words by using rhythms and rhymes and other sound effects. Read and revise what you have written as many times as you think you are improving the result. Then quit, and move on to something else.
2. Read poems by people who are widely admired and try to understand not only the meaning but how the meaning is conveyed, and how it affects you.

Yep, poetry is words on a paper that together have a special meaning to the writer or to the reader. Good way to begin is to start writing about your emotions. Hold a pen in your hand and think hard about some emotion. Try to feel it. Then just write down words or sentences that come in to your mind.

That depends on the kind you want to write. If you want to write metrical verse, you should read published examples or take a writing course (see link below) that teaches you how. Free verse is a very different animal. If you write haiku or sonnets or any other strict form, make sure you understand how it needs to be constructed.

Before I ever wrote any serious poetry I read a lot of work by many different writers. When I made my first attempts it often seemed as though it had been influenced by the writer I was currently reading. I stuck with it and eventually my style began to show itself to me and to those who I shared my work.. Critical analysis is important, learning to share your work and listen to criticism helped and continues to keep me and my work centered. It is a lifelong journey, have fun along the way

personally i think there is no wrong way to write a poem. just write what you feel and it will always be right because it came from your heart. poems DO NOT have to rhyme.

There are lots of books in any good library. If you are near a college book store, a good start would be required a required book for their creative writing course.

Keep your heart beating -- and don't forget to BREATHE. (Poetry comes from the mind expressing what is important to you as a person: form is not important. Don't expect to develop poetry as a skill -- the skill is in being able to express what is in your life).
