The placenta comes out generally after the baby is born. It is a part of the afterbirth. People generally focus on the baby and not on what is happening with the mother!

It is called afterbirth, the doctor delivers it after the baby comes out....If you choose, they will cultivate the cord blood from it and keep it in case you need it for the baby down the line. If not, I beleive they just do away with it...

Your doctor can exam it, it can go for students to study, samples of cord blood can be donated or use for experiment. Depends on the hospital some use it some don't. If you went to a teaching hospital safe bet they used it and you had no idea if you went to a county hospital they trash it. I asked my doc.
