Originally back in the 1939 when the Earth-2 version of Robin came out he was a boy thus the Boy Wonder moniker. Also, this was the same for the Earth-1 version. Eventually, Robin grows up and the Boy Wonder nickname was dropped. Currently, the new Robin (Tim Drake) doesn't use the term Boy Wonder and maybe the best Robin so far next to Dick Grayson who was the original Robin.

Batman is referred to as the Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight Detective among others. They made Robin the Boy Wonder to put some contrast to the darkness of the bat, hence the shiny colors, the smiling face, and the boy wonder term etc...
