I've been playing guitar for 6 months now and I have got the hang of playing chords but I feel like it's just not interesting enough musically. How long will it take me to learn the things that songs more than just chords and melodies?

If you are not content with just playing the rythem then why don't you try to learn the guitar solo to the songs. If you can't play cover tunes almost exactly like the original band did then I don't recommend playing that song at all. I have been playing guitar for 15 years and I still have much to learn. I have been in a few bands and believe me there is no better feeling than riffing out on stage and having the people go nuts over it.
