It protects the uterus of growing girls.

Not all girls are born with a hymen.

In some girls, it ruptures even if they do NOT have sex (big problem in some cultures that insist on testing virginity on the basis of the hymen being there).

If a girl has vaginal intercourse, then the penetration will cause it to rupture which may or may not cause it to bleed a little.

In some cases, it also stretches and may not rupture during intercourse.

Again, it is not 100% effective in telling you whether a girl is a virgin or not.
