That's a great link Spurdic13 gave. Lot's of good info in there.
Move over Jackie Robinson, Bud Fowler was WAY ahead of you!

The discrimination occured due to the fact that pro baseball (MLB) did not recognize the ability of black, or other minority players. This was still the prevelant attitude of many in the pre-war (WWII) US, as well as other countries.

There are many success stories involving minorities during that period.

The Tuskegee Airmen, the P-51 fighter pilots over Germany who NEVER lost an escorted bomber to enemy action.

There was a unit of Americans who were of Japanese descent which became one of the highest decorated combat units in the European theater.

There were the "Windtalkers". The Native Americans who proved themselves as soldiers and Americans in the Pacific theater.

There were also women who played baseball during that time (WWII) . They may not have been as "good" as the pros, but they did the job. They also for the large part, "ran the country" while the men were gone. They built the war machine, test drove, flew, and delivered at a pace the world had never seen.

It wasn't that other races (white folks) were banned from the ***** League, rather they were too good to even want to affiliate with them. You know them "darkies" didn't have the same abilities, or brains as real people! That was the attitude of the day.

I am glad that attitude has changed, and I hope that race never becomes an issue any more. We ARE all of one race, that is;

The human Race!!

I would hesistate to say the league was racist since it was the major leagues that were racist by not allowing black players in. There was one white player who played in the ***** Leagues in the Southern US after it effectively became a minor league after the ***** (major) leagues folded and that was Dick "Lefty" O'Neal who pitched for either Biloxi or Mobile in the late 1960's while that league was on its last legs. O'Neal makes a number of appearances each year at fund-raising events for former ***** League players.

No, unless you were black you could not play in the ***** League. I suppose if you look at it from a present day perspective it was probably an early day form of racism. But since blacks were denied main stream civil rights they had no choice. Contrary to one of the remarks in the message board, Hispanics did not play in the ***** League.

The point is why did they have to have a ***** league in the first place. Was there a ban on Afro Americans playing in the mayor league and why.

good question, no whites , but lots of Hispanics played... and to answer the question posed by "Boru"; no there was never an official ban on blacks in major league baseball . it was what they called "a gentleman's agreement"..[ now that's ironic.. and pathetic] it was started by a very influential ball player [of his time circa 1900], an outspoken racists and now "hall of famer" cap ansen[ thats also ironic and pathetic].ps prior to that there were black players in baseball [ before jackie robinson].. the "fleetwood" brothers are most notable... now the "silver lining" to all this is the great and colorfull legacy of history the ***** leagues left... and since baseball greatest contribution to american culture is its history, myths and legends.. we all owe a great "THANK YOU" to the legendary players of the ***** leagues...ps PLENTY of hyspanics played in the ***** leagues .. "martin dihigo"[ el maestro] was cuban.. for one....
