there is a chance that we could become relatively immortal within the next 50 years, with some very simple gene therapy.

From that point, evolution would change. We would manipulate ourselves and lose our current humaness quickly. But I think we would gain a greater sense of humanity.

Alternatively, all the people who believe in religion could have a big fight and screw things up big time

In our future we will adapt and survive as we always have done. In the near future I see several possibilities
- Widespread death, famine, disease and war as a result of pressure on the environment caused by global warming.
- Widespread death e.t.c. caused by nuclear war instigated by Pakistan, Iran or various Islamic terrorists, and then rapidly proliferating.
Both of these things will lead most of the earth's population being forced back to life as it was in the Middle Ages (many people still live there today) However, those who are rich will survive intact as they have always done.
In the far future, if we can harness a viable source of power, people will go on generational missions to colonise other planets/moons.
I personally hope we become extinct as soon as is possible because the human race is an absolute disgrace and always will be.

I personally believe the future of mankind is bright! We will find a way to survive by colonizing other planets ( maybe mars) and adapting to the earth's increasing heat! By then maybe we will be at peace with each other and could advance to better us all ! We will learn from our past mistakes of war and ignorence ! Mankind is not a disgrace! We are a great people!
