Extravagant is fine if you can afford it, but don't start a marriage going into debt.

I think an extravagant, expensive wedding is just plain silly. It doesn't make any sense to me at all! If you can't have a good time at your own wedding on a low budget, what does that say about your relationship and your future? I think the bride will be beautiful no matter if it's a HUGE ceremony or just close friends and family. My husband and I didn't even have a wedding... just went to the home of the Justice of the Peace. I wore a nice dress, he wore a nice suit. It was just the two of us and we STILL laugh about how "silly" it was to this day! (It's been three years now.) There are so many "better" things to do with your finances as a newlywed couple... I can't see going into debt over your own wedding. Keep it simple... you'll remember it forever no matter WHAT you spend. Bye!

Its fine if that is what you want. Hopefully you only do it once. But in this day and age of divorce and remarriage it seems to be a waste. You put all this money into an extravagant wedding only to divorce a short time later. What is the purpose of that? A big wedding doesn't guarantee a perfect wedding. So, why not make it simple and small? Use less money and do something more important with the money.

My 20 year marriage is proof that you dont need to spend a lot to have a wonderful wedding and wonderful marriage.

I am guessing that my parents spent a total of MAYBE $1,500 (you read correct.. One Thousand Five Hundred dollars).

My hubby and I didnt see the need for the extravigance. We had a simple ceremony in my parents home surrounded by friends and family adn then had a simple dinner reception at a local restaurant afterwards.

I agree with the posters who say the debt is unnecessary! Like they say..you cant buy love. If you can afford the huge cost without blinking an eye (not all that many can) then by all means..go for it. Otherwise, I say invest your monies into your life together instead of a party.

Best wishes!

They're nice, I'll admit, but I also have to ask why would I spend $20,000 on a wedding when a small church wedding is wonderful too?
I prefer a small Church wedding and saving the bucks for the first house we bought. While the wedding pictures fade, the house stands and puts a roof over our heads.
