The origin of the Friday the 13th superstition has been linked to the belief that there were 13 people at The Last Supper of Jesus, who was crucified on Good Friday, but no evidence has been found that Friday 13th was considered especially unlucky until the 19th century. The number 13, however, has a long history of association with ill-luck. It has been linked to the fact that a lunisolar calendar must have 13 months in some years, while the solar Gregorian calendar and lunar Islamic calendar always have 12 months in a year.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia: Fear of Friday the 13th
13: The Devil's Dozen
It is said: If 13 people sit down to dinner together, all will die within the year. The Turks so disliked the number 13 that it was practically expunged from their vocabulary (Brewer, 1894). Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue. Many buildings don't have a 13th floor. If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's luck (Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Theodore Bundy and Albert De Salvo all have 13 letters in their names). There are 13 witches in a coven.
Though no one can say for sure when and why human beings first associated the number 13 with misfortune, the belief is assumed to be quite old and there exist any number of theories purporting to trace its origins to antiquity and beyond.
It has been proposed, for example, that fears surrounding the number 13 are as ancient as the act of counting.

Friday the 13th is the date the French Templars were condemned to death by the pope in 1300's-something-ish. The Knights Templar had outgrown their britches and the church needed/wanted more stability in control and brought about the date of Friday the 13th into legend as a voodoo whoodoo, since the public was sided with the Templars either by politics or by commonality.
Something about leverage and secrets and the whole conspiracy theory that could or would blow the lid off the Catholic control of the populace.
Thirteen itsself is not an unlucky number. Thirteen is regarded as a nice large round number that is balanced and assymytrical with asthetics. It was only after this date in history that people associated 13 as evil and vile and of the devil and such.

Its a pagan thing. There are 13 lunar months and traditionally there are 13 witches in a covern. As it was a regiliously significant number of pagans, the christian churches turned away from number 13 and like so many other pagan things began to associate the number with evil. People often say that Judas was the root of this problem as he was the 13th person at the last supper. Im not so sure about that one I think its just coincidence.I dont think any of that stuff about the templars is the reason either, I know the templars were rooted out but it was because they were so rich and powerful they threatened the king. There are too many people here who have read the davinci code (its fiction ya know).

October 13, 1307 - Several days before, the Pope issued an order to French King Phillip IV to round up the Knights Templar and have them tried for heresy. The Papal order was allegedly due to some secret knowledge that the Templars had and were using it as leverage against the papacy. These alleged secrects are said to be of a nature that would destroy the Christian/Catholic governmental rule and bring truth to all.
It is said that October 13, 1307 was a friday.
BTW, it takes 13 loopes in a noose in order to properly hang someone. Any less and the rope won't hold, any more and the poor sap becomes decapitated. Just want I read.

One theory, most recently propounded in the novel "The Da Vinci Code," holds that it came about not as the result of a convergence, but a catastrophe, a single historical event that happened nearly 700 years ago. The catastrophe was the decimation of the Knights Templar, the legendary order of "warrior monks" formed during the Christian Crusades to combat Islam. This happend on Friday October the 13 1307 .

some interesting answers here!! Pope (Pious the something??) came to power after death of old pope. He gave an order to dessimate the Knights Templar on 13th of whatever month it was. Literally thousands of Templars in many countries were burnt at the stake. very similar to the witch hunts. This is fact. Not made up as many believe after Da Vinci Code. He used some facts, some fiction and a lot of imagination. Anyway, to answer your question, ever after the slaying of these Knights, Friday the 13th was known as unlucky, and not a good day.

Knights Templar?
The correct answer is to do with a coupling of events around the Last Supper, there were 13 people present. Judas, the betrayer, killed himself the day after, Friday therefore as time went by the number and the day began to be regarded as unlucky.
