In the middle of watching the Firefly: The Complete Series DVD set.
Book is an Alliance mole, amirite? I mean, come on, how can a shepherd know what rifle was used to kill a man just from a glance at the holes in his body, let alone do so before the veteran standing beside him?

Book is what he says he is. What he was before becoming a Shepherd has been the subject of some-to-much speculation amongst fans of Firefly/Serenity. There are hints through the shortened season and the movie, but there is never a final resolution. If that is a "spoiler", then you can still enjoy the series with that knowledge - and you don't need to waste time wondering when he is going to show his true side, or something.
Book's backstory is one of the mysteries of the show - there are others, about other characters.
Although the Book story continues to get much the mention (at least much of the mention that there is), there is a lot more hinted at about Inara (and hinted at more subtlely) in the series.
After watch the shows, be sure to listen to the episode commentaries, as well.
