I don't think that the human race is heading anywhere. That would seem to imply that we, the human race, as a whole have some sort of a plan. If that were the case then there would not be so many people who ask the question, "what is the purpose of life?".
There are of course those who believe they have a purpose in carrying out Gods will. This however is profoundly misguided, how does this God know his purpose? How can he be right? Consider this, the world God created in 7 days, he's had 2000 years to make the promised utopia, where is it?
I believe I have no purpose in the grand scheme of things, mainly because I believe there is no grand scheme of things.
Anyway, to actually answer the question:
We are currently headed into an era which will see change on an unprecedented scale. With everything happening in the world at the moment there is little hope of accurately judging where we will find ourselves in the future.
There are studies going on currently that hold great hope of producing light speed travel in the very near future, say 10 years. If this works, global warming issues and fossil fuels may become a thing of the past. If it does not then global warming and the loss of fossil fuels are a pressing concern.
That is just one major "if" in todays climate and there are many such as this. Nobody could possibly say with any great conviction where we will be in 20 years time.

If I were you I would rather think like a horse. If for example there are ten thousand people running a gruelling race - trying to stay ahead of everyone else, trying their guts out to beat eachother just to get to the finsih line a whole lot quicker - then not even a single horse would turns up to watch. But on the other hand, if there is a race betwen just two horses, ten thousand people would flock to see the race. You see, horses do not bother, they take things easy. They are cool people. They have reached the peak of their evolutionary development and now they are completely happy the way they are. When they run they do not compete with brother horses, they just run, and run, and run as fast as they can because they jsut like to run, and run. Then they stand firmly upon their owm four feet feeling proud both about their race and their kind. This is why everyone likes them.
But we human beings, when we race, we fight, we use illegal drugs, wining to us means a matter of beyond life and death - a matter of honour and money. We use all trick in our bags to win, to make all other lose - just to get to the finish line as fast as we can. So what does all that tell you about where this human race is heading to. I personally hope it is heading towards a fine race course where some nice horses are running a fair race for a good bird charity - now that is the spirit, isn't it?

It is all dependent on the human race which direction it wants to follow. In the 60's we nearly had a nuclear crisis when the Soviet Union took missiles to Cuba. If the human race stops chasing monetary values and aim for spiritual ones, we might have a solution for a better future.
The desire for money and more money at any costs will be our undoing. What does one need a billion dollars for? Affluence, and prestige? At what coast to our planet? The problem with the human race is that the selfish are always stronger than the wise. So our destiny is in the hands of people who shun wisdom. Until people are chosen into leadership because of their wisdom and not the glibness of their tongues then the human race will head for a better future.

Humans are the strongest species amongst all other and have thus satisfied the saying 'only the srongest shall survive'.We have multiplied and occupied all habitable corners of this globe.
Indeed ,the worldwideweb, gives momentum to our dvelopment as near to having 'the Big Bang' anew once again.
Eradication of poverty , will come about in a lifetime or two, in the future.
That will ensure a balanced standard of worldwde living.
We can give the future spouses of ours ,the credit that they will look after the earth, and its wellbeing for the future generations.
I only hope that we can get to a firmer footing on the finding , life elsewhere , other than Earth.
Any signals from outer space if can be acquired, gives a lot of hope that we are not alone.

It's not a race , and all the heading places is going the wrong way. When we can be where we are , there is a chance for real change.

It hasn't got the faintest idea; it just mooches about :oP
Humanity is, after all, a race of restless and natural born searchers and seekers, and if it ever does decide where it wants to be it'll decide soon after getting there that it might be better some place else.

i believe that humanity is now stunned by technology, they will continue persuading the technologies discoveries while the society is crashing, then they will notice that the society is in danger so they will turn to improve their society , in that times sociology will become more important than nuclear physics or computer science , after all that, humanity will have a healthy society with all the illness and old troubles solved either by technology or by self improvement
