Grey is fine. Black and navy are also good options. If you prefer grey, go with grey... that's my opinion. If you are dressing up, you want to feel comfortable with your choices and exude confidence. If you wear the colors that you like- you will be comfortable and more confident!

Grey and it's shades of dark and light look nice...specially with white shirts! Black and Navy and Browns and Caramel, off-white and beige are other popular colors. There are a number of style options you should choose between and also always try on a trouser in the store before buying it and consider which shirt looks most flattering with it before actually wearing it n going out. Also, dnt always buy solid colors, try pin strips, minute checks and textured fabrics for a varied look. Even coudroys or khakis can look nice. Or trousers with a fold on the foot. Just experiment a little for some time and observe people whom u see around you and who r looking nice...check out latest fashion trends and you will soon know more styles for urself too !!

It is difficult to generalize about "a shirt and tie of any color". Neutrals are best in such situations. I have several shades of grey trousers, so I can match one pair with nearly anything. I wouldn't discard black. It can be considered just the darkest grey. Between white and black are myriad shades of grey. Do you have white pants? Think in terms of the total ensemble. Contrast makes it more interesting. You should also consider the degree of formality. Tan or khaki pants are casual, while black or grey are dressier. If you have a navy blue blazer, rather light grey pants make a very dressy combo. Darker grey ones seem duller. Tan ones make you a preppie and not to be taken seriously among adults. Some colors of jackets won't do with grey. Camel tan ones are best with brown tones, but black will do. Grey won't.

I think black is a sure bet. It is safe to wear with all colors of shirts and ties. Just make sure they fit well, not too tight or too loose. Also be sure the tie matches the shirt.
