Because they're not pigs ^.^ . Guinea Pigs are rodents and are distantly related to capybara, the world's largest rodent at around 100 pounds.

They're not quite sure why guinea pigs are called guinea pigs. The suspect it's due to the squealing /oinking noise (called 'wheeking') they make. In the Mountains of South America they're raised as livestock and are eaten. They run around at liberty and when the farmer gets hungry, PLOP! Into the pot they go! Some scientists think that the reason Guinea pigs are called 'pigs' is because their meat supposedly tastes like pork. Others say their meat is served with the skin on, same as pork. Others feel they're called pigs because they can be crammed into tiny spaces, like pigs can.

They get the name "pig" from the squealing noise they make.
