The Republic of South Africa is situated on the southern tip of the African continent and is home to more than 46 million people. There are 11 official languages of which Zulu is the most spoken mother tongue language, spoken by nearly 24 per cent of the population. Most people in major cities can speak or understand English while literacy in the region stands at over 80 per cent.

South Africa is a relatively young democracy, its first democratic election was held in 1994. This ended more than a century of black oppression, even though Apartheid only officially came into existence in 1948. As a result of its violent past, South Africa now has the most progressive constitution in the world ensuring the rights of all its citizens. It is the biggest economy in Africa and is the world’s biggest exporter of gold and platinum. South Africa has good transport infrastructure, exceptionally advanced telecommunications systems and has the tenth largest stock exchange in the world. Its monetary unit is the South African Rand (ZAR).

It is bordered by six countries including Lesotho, which is landlocked by South Africa. South Africa has nine provinces, with Gauteng being the financial centre. There are three capitals, Cape Town (legislative), Bloemfontein (judicial) and Pretoria (administrative).

Its coastline spans 2500 kilometres, with the warm Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic Ocean meeting at Cape Point. The landscape varies from the semi-dessert in Kalahari to semi-tropical in Nelspruit while Cape Town enjoys a Mediterranean climate. The Khahlamba Drakensberg National Park is one of four world heritage sites and boasts the country’s highest point – the Thabana Ntlenyana, whose mountain peak rises to 3,482 m. Meanwhile the site of the Sterkfontein caves, north of Johannesburg, is considered to be, ‘the Cradle of Humankind’ after the discovery of fossils dating back between two and three million years.

South Africa and Football

Football in South Africa mirrors the country’s history and the struggle of its people. Segregated football was enforced by the apartheid government and this later became a catalyst for the non-racial sport movement. Football, or soccer as it is known in South Africa, was also the favoured sport of Nelson Mandela when he was incarcerated on Robben Island. In 1991, football was the first sport to become unified, incorporating the four historically separated football bodies. It has captured the hearts of this sporting nation and has become a passionate love for all South Africans. At football games one is likely to hear the sound of the Vuvuzela, a plastic horn which gives South African football games a unique lively atmosphere.

South Africa is currently building five new football stadiums in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. It will be the first time in history that the region will own stadiums dedicated to football. Under the previous Apartheid government, stadiums were built exclusively for rugby and cricket. This is a legacy that the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will leave in South Africa and for its people.

South Africa is expecting to host a world class event for the first African FIFA World Cup.

20,000 people killed, 37% infected with HIV/AIDS, 1000 families immigrate every month! WOW! Soon South Africa will cease to exist, seeing that people are dying. That is not including the people who die of natural causes. How long before you predict this happens?

FYI, we are way ahead of Germany when they were preparing for the World Cup. We have stadiums, they need to be done up. Wouldn't it be great that all the idle hands will have work, and then the unemployment level will drop. Come on, we all know what being idle does.

I am so postitve about the World Cup! I think people should stop critising the government, the people, etc and try to be a bit more positive. SAfrica is still a relatively new country. You all know what kids are like. You send them negative vibes and they will do everything they can to prove you right. Yes, expose the crime, unemplyment rate, etc, but seriously, get over it! It has been done/said ad nauseum!

And for the people who have been sending me e-mails. I am NOT white. I HAVE been affected by crime. Mugged 3 times and hijacked once. However, when I was in NY (on a 1 month holiday), I had my passport, traveller's cheques and cash stolen, mugged and sexually harrassed. Guess what? The police did nothing! Even though these guys threatened me! And to the person who continually e-mails me. Please stop! I have reported you!

Can you please show us where you got this information of the amount of people that get killed a year etc. Show us that information as proof FIRST! LETS SEE YOUR PROOF!!!!

A civil war predicted by 2009??? Who predicted that? Did God tell you that??? I BET NO!

Our Safety and Security Minister is a load of **** to be honest with you! I wish he would get lost!

South Africa is currently getting ready for the 2010 soccer, do you expect stadiums to be built and ready in one week or something?? For f*ck sakes people! You's are all going WAY overboard about this. Judge South Africa on the 2010 soccer when the time comes and we have nothing! We have got 4 years to get ready for this!!! You people think we should be ready for it 4 years in advance and make sure it is ready in under a week!! GET A LIFE!!!!

The 2010 is being held in SOUTH AFRICA!! THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT THIS!!! STOP BEING JEALOUS AND GET ON WITH YOUR OWN LIVES!!!

2010 in South Africa is going to be absolutely wonderful and successful. I will be there to experience it and i am going to have the best time watching it AT THE STADIUMS! The rest of you people who have nothing better to say about South Africa can enjoy watching the soccer from your tv at home because you're all too much of babies to come to South Africa! Well sorry for you because this country is beautiful and has soooo many wonderful experiences, places, people, food and my list will go on and on!

If you dont want to come to South Africa then TOO BAD FOR YOU! MISS OUT ON THE BEST EXPERIENCE - I DONT CARE!

People around the Mediterranean and Middle East have been eating flat bread with various toppings since neolithic times, and more then likely their knowledge of these recipes flowed between the various peoples. However, pizza as we would recognize it, with a tomato topping, originated in Naples, Italy around the 16th century. At the time it was common belief that the tomato, a member of the deadly nightshade family, was poisonous and many people did not eat it. However, the poor of Naples had been adding the fruit to their breads for sometime and this humble origin could be considered the forerunner of the pizza. Also of note, Naples was heavily influenced by Greek as well as Etruscan cultures, both of which featured foods very similar in make to the pizzas of today. There is much more on the topic in the link below.

I think you are too much of a Neil Watson's desciple.
We are worried just as much as you are about the soaring crime rate in South Africa, but the most stupid thing we would not do is to make million announcements about it on Yahoo Answers. It is not going to help. Neither will it make South Africa benefit. 'What do we need to do to solve our situation' should be the question. The worst thing is that you are not even well informed. Go to school. Be educated. Get informed, and lastly, make sense.
I'll give you a starting point. Read the links below and get informed. It might save you in future from posting rubbish information on Yahoo answers.

Nice of DKNY to trot out the Government and Tourist Board propaganda but we are not as deluded to believe that crap as she is. Agliotti has his usual sarcastic remark from behind his cowering position with his gun at the ready. The 1000's of victims of crime will really appreciate their position and disregard them as the sheep that they are. Deluded fools with no concern for anyone but themselves. The facts speak for themselves and no matter how much they are in denial the citizens of South Africa speak the truth on www.crimexposouthafrica.org
