I am not sure where to find a replacement vcr for my van- I don't know if I can switch over a standard VCR or do I need to buy one that was manufactured for this purpose.

u can buy one for vehicles, its more expensive, or go to an autozone, etc. they have a part where u can cut the end of the power wire and run it into one of ur aux. inputs to ur fuse box

I believe what you are looking for is a power inverter. they are available at harbourfreight.com and northerntool.com as well as many other recreational retailers.
