Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was Rs 75/-

Each one contributed Rs.25/-.

The waiter took the bill to the cashier.

The cashier was happy & decided to give them a discount of Rs.5/- & asked the waiter to return them Rs.5/-.

Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute Rs 5 among 3 persons?

He kept Rs 2 in his pocket & gave one rupee to each one of the 3 persons.

So initially each one had contributed Rs.25. Now as they are given 1 rupee back, their contribution reduces to Rs 24.

They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 rupees are in the waiters pocket.

The total becomes 74. But they had paid Rs 75.

Where is the remaining 1 rupee?.

Just think of it this way. At the end of the night: the cashier has 70. The waiter has 2 and the diners have 3. That adds up to 75. The diners did not in fact pay 24 each to the cashier. The diners have all parted with 24, of which 23.33 has gone to the cashier, and the remaining 0.66 has gone to the waiter.

you cant add the Rs2 that the waiter has to generate the total. in fact you need to subtract it
The total Rs that they paid is 70...

24*3 - 2 = 70

in other terms
25 *3 =75 (Three paid Rs 25 each)
25*3 - 5 = 75-5 (The cashier gave 5 discount)
25*3 - 3 -2 = 70 ( the waiter divided it into 3 and 2)
(25 - 1)*3 - 2 = 70 (the waiter took 2 and gave 3 back one to each)
24*3 - 2 = 70 (the net money paid is 70 and not 75)

The fallacy is owing to two being added to 72 to yield Rs 74. Actually, the friends paid together Rs 72. The cashier gets Rs 70 (after returning Rs 5) and Rs 2 is with the waiter. Thus Rs. 2 is to be subtracted from 72 and not added.

You got it completely wrong. If you assume that they took all the 5 rupees that was their discount, then they would have paid only 70 rupees. But the waiter didn't give them all the 5 rupees, and took 2 for himself. That means they paid a net of 72 rupees. So each paid 24 rupees. 24*3=72.And if we add those 72 to the 3 rupees they took (not the 2 the waiter took for himself), it becomes a total of 75 rupees.
