Most women are guilty of driving in impractical shoes. Let's face it; most women are guilty of doing everything in impractical shoes. I vividly remember my mother almost crashing the car when the hooks on her trendy 80s basketball shoes linked together and rendered her incapable of putting her foot on the brake. On a 6 hour drive to Cornwall in the height of summer, my friend turned around halfway through the journey and confessed that "perhaps driving in flip-flops wasn't the best idea" - and she's not alone. A recent survey conducted by UK insurance giant Norwich Union with 1,000 motorists confirmed that nearly three quarters of the British public admit they find it difficult to drive when wearing flip-flops, with almost a quarter of drivers admitting to driving in such footwear regularly. And the less said about the woman at a local factory who drove a forklift truck in knee-high boots the better.

The truth is, as tempting as it is to drive to a date in some sexy peep-toe courts or take the girls to the pub in your favourite cowboy boots, it's playing with fire. Driving in the wrong footwear is extremely dangerous, and a driver isn't just putting themselves at risk, but the passengers, the car itself and everyone else on the road. It's impossible to have decent control over a car while wearing ridiculous shoes, and with autumn / winter catwalk trends edging toward the bulky and bold, wearing high-fashion footwear in the car is going to be even more dangerous as we move into the new season.

According to the Driving Standards Agency, "High heels and slippery soles can be dangerous on the pedals. Shoes that are too wide, or that easily fall off, can be just as dangerous. Flat shoes are more appropriate than high heels. There is less risk of the foot slipping away, especially from the brake pedal". This would be fine if we weren't currently bombarded with images of the aforementioned winter platforms, wedges and high-heeled and lace-up winter boots. Why is it that the most gorgeous shoes are also the complete antithesis of the perfect driving shoe? To allow us to buy more shoes, that's why!

Therefore, I feel driving in high heels can in no way be sexy for women.

Driving in heels makes me keep my foot in an uncomfortable position and hurts my calves. It's also harder to control the pedals.

Not exactly fun doing that. Definitely NOT sexy! That is why I always take mine off BEFORE I start driving.

I haven't done it too often. Usually when I go out with my hubby in my 5" stilettos, he is driving. The next time I try it though I will let you know!
