Oh you've seen it your one of the luckiest cause it can be seen only in rare moments a yellowishorange glow i see it on some occassions Well i'll explain you it all happens due the multiple diffractions and internal reflections of the light in the atmosphere and also due to the fluctuation of light i dont know exactly but i heard of this kind sun upper atmosphere undergoes serious bursts and sends out gases i hope you know about the corona so what happens to the light when reaching earth is it bends through the atmosphere due to the flux in the space fabric while reaching us the light undergoes continous diffraction. So we see different colours only while the sun is setting or rising because at that light difffracts more because there is more bent near the horizon.
Well this is one of them and the other is something different it says about the dust particles in air but i believe in this.
HEY mind you i'm from INDIA.

It may have been a brush fire in the hills over by Santa Barbara. They flicker and glow orange just like you have described, and if you are looking to the west you would be looking almost directly at SB, across the bay of course

was it a glow, like an aura? or like something in the sky moving.. like maybe a satellite? if it was literally like a glow coming from the ground going up to the sky then maybe something in the city was on fire, or blew up, or just had a bunch of lights turned on..
