This is always difficult.
I would just say "I'm sorry" and give them a hug. Usually it so difficult a time that you do not need to say any more.
They may need help with other things. Maybe offer to drive the to the wake, keep them company at dinner, etc. Just be open to what they may need.

You should be there for him/her... There is no need to say anything, no words can help... But still don't stay silent, talk with him/her about anything, don't just feel sorry, try to be there for your friend. Take him/her somewhere nice...

In times like this, u dont have to say much. Just let the person know u're there for him/her.

a facial expression, a hug... just be there if they need you,,,,
Offer to help in some way you know they will appreciate.
