I've found that it is usually my attitude that determines how friendly other people (in general) will be. We tend to draw conclusions, good or bad, about another culture very quickly, and change our biases very slowly.
That's why prime tourist destinations strive so hard to greet you well upon arrival, whether it's a lei in hawaii or a clean taxi cab. So keep an open mind when travelling. And don't let a few individuals define your experience.

NO WAY Every person I ever met in europe was nicer than any I know from the states. And I am including people who did not speak English. Let's put it this way, when walking around france, no matter how rude the people are percieved to be, they will make the effort to speak to you in english if you approach them. I definitely could not say the same for most americans if the roles were reversed.

it depends on what you are using to quantify friendliness
Americans for example will buy rounds of drinks at bars
this is less common in some European countries especially the northern European counties
this isn't being unfriendly it's just a cultural difference
for example, in the past in America men would be considered rude if they didn't physically seat a female companion at a restaurant, men now aren't ruder then they were 70 years ago soley because they don't seat women at a table, just American culture has changed

Yes. Europeans can be more stuffy while Americans are more liberal, friendly, and open. However you must remember that different cultures have different ideas about what constitutes proper social interaction.

I've never been to Europe, so I don't know about Europeans.
Most Americans I know are elegant, caring, and self-contented.
And of course, they are very friendly!
