The most exquisite part of biting nails is the skin around the nail
Just sitting here, at the moment
when I come across this one and realise I HAVE MY NAILS IN MY MOUTH.

Uh.
It never sees to amaze me how many people admit to having the same problem as me.At times, this makes the skin around my fingernails buff up, or even bleed.

I will consider myself ‘stopped’ after a full 30 days of no skin biting. Which means a minimum of one month until I can confirm if this goal has been accomplished or not.

The real problem lies in the fact that most of the time, I don’t even notice that I’m doing it. Will I be able to keep my mind on such a petty thing once and for all, and kick the habit?

I'm a 27 year old manicurist who also bites. I don't recomend acrylic because you will find a way to bite it off, and it's very toxic if swallowed.

What made me stop was buying a product called Nailtiques. It's a bit expensive, about 17 bucks a bottle, but really helped my nails grow and look beautiful again. You can find it a Fred Meyer, and certain drug stores. Look around in the nail care isle.

Another helper for me was applying lotion and cuticle balm that smelled nice. I like Creative Nail Design's Solar line, particularly the Solar Balm and Solar Oil. This is generally available in nicer salons. You could also find something similar at Sally Beauty Supply.

Once you start taking care of your hands I think you'll be less inclined to bite at them. The main thing to remember is that it's just a bad habit that has to be broken. Be consious of when you bite and figure out what trigers it. Try and find something else to do with your hands. Good Luck!

Why not go and get your nails manicured...just the once, and you'll see just how beautiful they can be! Then you might not want to bite them anymore?

If we bite the skin too far down...we can really damage the way our nails grow permanently-you can end up with really deep ridges or worse! (I met someone once whose nail had split in half and now grew in two separate nails!)

We always think we can stop habits when we want to...but sometimes the results can be permanent! Hope you find a way...

I didn't think anyone else did this but my boyfriend does the exact same thing! He wants to stop desparatly because first of all he doesn't like the fact that he does it but secondly when he has just come out of the shower the damaged skin it pale and tender and is soft, like it's pruney.

His fingers are much better now but he couldn't stop himself doing it, he asked me to make him stop. So everytime he does it I smack him on the hand or tell him off or bite his cheek, it's turned into a little game now, he pretends to do it so he can get a bite on the cheek and we can play fight.

Anyways... I don't know how you should do it by yourself unless you reward yourself for not doing it by buying yourself something or you could get someone close to you, like your mother or someone to help you stop.

Hope I could help.

Biting your nails is a common nervous thing. You can buy stuff to make them taste bad, or get hypnotherapy. There's a good article, the link for which I've put below.

Every time you notice that you are just about to have a chew just stop and think about how many disgusting bacteria are present on your hands at all times - especially around your fingernails and nail beds.

Especially if you do not wash your hands after going to the loo!!

You can get a nail varnish that tastes like crap (not literally) it's see through so just put it around your nails.
