I can't do maths to save my life! have to used fingers and calculators! But other people I was in school with, who had the same education, are really good at it.
So, why is this? Is this a physical thing (in the brain/hereditory?) or what?

math requires the ability to remember a lot of figures eg 2*5=10 but unlike other things we have to rember there is rarely anything to associate with. the brain is also good at discarding info it thinks we don't need with some this is numbers (i have excellent memory execept for numbers). if you can handle letters in algerbra it would suggest number memory is the prob and not intelligence. i also suspect you missed out on basic arthimatic as a long child.

You can do maths, maths is not calculation/ calculation is not maths. I am a bit that way myself, so are some real mathematicians. I
We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Some are due to inborn differences, some are learned, some are accidental.
Education is not like slot machine. Everyone responds differently to the same stimulus. The greatest teacher in the world can't get it across to everyone. That's why all sorts of different methods work. The variability of human beings is one of the things that keeps society functioning and developing, and gives the species as a whole a greater chance of survival.
Keep on pressing those buttons and counting the digits. Who has been telling you there is anything wrong in it?

At the ripe old age of 43, I am currently retaking my maths o-level. I've never liked maths. I have a good degree and an IQ of 140, but a mental block due to poor teaching when I was young. We were all taught badly, and in my experience maths teachers were the most sarcastic and unpleasant bullies of the lot. You can do maths, but you have to unlearn all the unpleasant memories and mental blocks you associate with it first. It's nothing to do with your brain. If you're smart enough to ask the question whether you're stupid, you're not! Good luck!

Like any other skill, some are born manifesting the aptitude and interest, and thus it is easy for them. However, the potential to be just as good is in anyone. You just need the interest and drive enough to get your mind into it. Consider it as "drawing out your innate ability", which is already there and just not on the surface yet. It's that attitude that is the quickest way to getting to be good at something.

I did my honors in Math. I used my fingers for calculation, well, I see that you are good at it as well.
After all, Math is just a subject taught at school. In practice everyone is a master at it...are you game?...How many dollars do you want?..I hope you got it

I think 'how good at maths' = short-term memory + grasping the concept + how 'strong' is your brain. It's like a web. Once one is down, the rest is down. i never grasped the concept of algebra, probably because my brain is 'not strong enough'....
i hope you get what i mean by 'strong'...
P.S. Have you ever heard of a famous person who is the highest rank at more than one talent?

It is something to do with the side of the brain which is used, i am hopeless at maths (i call it number dyslexia) but good at english and spelling etc.
I guess we cant all be good at everything though!

I think you can do any math you wish if you truly put your mind to it! Just learn it in steps with a very patient teacher and you'll be on top I assure you that! I mean, I was behind average when it came to math, and now I'm one of the best in my school!

I think a lot of it is anxiety. If you can do algebra, you can do any math.
Some people do have a unique ability to do complex math in their heads. I don't, but give me a pencil and a calculator and I'm fine!
Don't sweat it.

I am exactly the same, I am terrible at maths, but all my friends are in the top group, I cannot understand how people are good at it, and they can't understand how people are bad at it. It's really weird because I am in top set for everything, and bottom set for maths.
