The dumbest move? Nah. It's not that significant. Like someone else said, trading Dye back in the day was pretty foolish. As a White Sox fan, I'm glad he's on my team now. :)

I do agree with you that the Dodgers got the best of that trade. Betemit is a dangerous hitter. He switch-hits and plays multiple positions. He's very good as a pinch-hitter. I think he was very valuable to the Braves off the bench, and he was a good insurance policy for the oft-injured Chipper Jones.

The Braves bullpen is a weakness this season, but honestly, I don't think Danys Baez is the answer. I heard they were thinking of sending Betemit to San Diego for Scott Linebrink. That would have been a much better trade for Atlanta.

Dumbest "move" the Braves have ever made?? No! Betemit is 26 and is a back up on the Atlanta Braves team right now, and the Braves have the worst middle-relief in the majors. Would you rather have the Braves trade an icon in Chipper and put Betemit starting at 3b? Now that would be the dumbest move ever-- trade an icon for a .279 career minor league hitter.

The dumbest move the Braves ever made was in 1997 when they traded Jermaine Dye and Jamie Walker to Kansas City for Michael Tucker and Keith Lockhart. Now that was a dumb move. Dye is a stud (just ask white sox fans)! Where is Michael Tucker now?? Flippin' burgers at BK, that's where.

Mercutio 41 response to me:
Pleez. Having been in Atlanta this long, I take great exception to chipper "father of the year" jones being labeled an icon. Aside from personal reasons, he is getting old, fragile, and when he does go on a streak, he hurts himself. Betemit on the other hand, is young, plays multi-positions, bats anywhere in the order, and deserves a chance to play everyday. Yes, I would love to see them make a big move and trade jones. Actually, both of the could go and it wouldn't really bother me. the talent they could get for them would be awesome.

My Response to him:
So you forget what Chipper meant to the Braves during the mid-90's? I think Atlanta has won about 12 strait division titles, and a world series... I think Chipper had a little something to do with that. Yeah, I know, pitching also too. But, what is your obsession with Betemit?

Chipper isn't the player he once was, but even at his age, he is still waaaay batter than a young Betemit. Betemit will never, ever, ever be a star in this league. If he hits 30 or more h.r.’s in one season I will personally give you $1,000.

Sometimes even though you weren't the player you once were, it doesn't mean the team can just shove you out... Sometime's teams will keep their players that helped them out (Gwynn with SD, Ripken with Balt etc.) Why tarnish the legacy of a player just to get a couple of young players… there's something called respect... now give some to Chipper.

I simply answered your question if that was the dumbest move the Braves have ever made, and it wasn't-- not by a long shot!

No, that would be the Doyle Alexander trade in the early 1980's. Betemit had no future with the Braves other than as a backup to Chipper Jones and will see full-time duty in LA. As to picking up Baez in the same trade - it will be interesting to see what he does in the bullpen. Have you ever noticed, when the Braves pick up a relief pitcher, he self-destructs? They could get Mariano Rivera from the Yankees and he would probably never save another game!!!

What are you talking about. Aybar is going to have a much better career than Betemit and Baez supplies much needed bullpen help. Now you can look around to see what other ex-Indians closers are on the trading block and trade for them. Maybe Jose Mesa is available.

No, the braves NEEDED a closer, because watching the 9th inning was torture for braves fans. Yes, Betemit was good, but the braves were desperate for a closer. It actually worked out well for both teams.

He left as a loose Agent to the damn Yankees. additionally, on account that he exchange into the decrease ranked form A freee agent the yankees signed after C.C and Teixeira, the Blue Jays basically get a third around p.c.. from the yanks instead of a customary rounder which you in many cases get from a sort A loose agent. The Jays have been given screwed two times via the Yanks interior the comparable deal. circulate JAYS!!!

I'm a braves fan and I think it was a dumb move but hey I got to say if he wasn't getting the job done what else are they going to do keep hurting the team. I think that they have got a good deal out of getting Bob Wickman!! Go Braves!!
