I have 3 laptops, and a PS2 that access a router. If my firewall is enabled, should I still secure my network? And if so what is the simplest way?

Thanks in advance!

Yes you MUST secure your router. No firewall will stop anyone near your house from getting in to your computers. It's like leaving the front door open. There getting DIRECT access to your computers, they don't have to go through the Internet.
People drive around just looking for open wireless nets.

You should see your router manual because they may have special instructions. Give it a good password. Nothing lame like "12345" or "password" or anything that can be easely guessed.

Yes you do need to secure your wireless network, as the firewall is the defence between your PC/computer and the internet.
The wireless link is the other side of the firewall which is open to the world (normally) so anybody could sniff the data from it if they wanted (if it's not secured).

Make sure you are using WPA encryption (Pre Shared Key or PSK) and use MAC access control so only your PC's can connect to the wireless network.
You can also do things like hide the SSID so you don't amke yourself more noticable.
Secure the Wireless point asap.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

If the router's firewall is working correctly you're better off not using any on your networked computers. It'll be much easier that way and it's also much simpler to tweak.

caulski is dam close to rite.... use wpa (not wep), etc. also change the default settings on the router (name/password), also turn off the UPNP. for a complete, easy to understand wav file about this (and many other security topics) go to: grc.com/security now.... i think #17, 27, and a few others cover these topics.
