Yes, of course he was. Here's a radical theory: the American people, government and NASA had the nerve to invest an awful lot of time, effort, and lives into the Apollo programme, and as a result Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon on 20th July 1969. It was one of the greatest achievements in human history, and (as a Briton), something the American government did the whole world could be proud of. When could you last say that? Anyone who bandies conspiricy theories around is having fun, but at the expense of astronauts such as Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, who died in pursuit of the Apollo dream.

Neil Armstrong was the first man to WALK on the moon, Neil and Buzz Aldrich were the first men on the moon as they landed at the same time and Buzz was second to walk there. There was a third astronaut (forgot his name) who never landed with them but stayed with the mother ship. John Glenn was the first man to orbit the moon.

See "Capricorn One" if you're interested in this topic. I'm not endorsing the thesis, necessarily, but it's an interesting movie and plausible.

To answer another answerer's post on the subject: one theory about what was done with the diverted Space Program money was to initiate a huge military and corporate development of weather and communications satellites. The idea is that taxpayers' funds were used to develop a project that largely benefited private corporations and thus the rich. The military serves to protect these corporate interests.

I'm just relating the theory as I understand it. I'm not promoting the theory as I have no proof, but do see "Capricorn One."

Yes he was despite the conspiracy loonies who say otherwise,
we did it, we finally went to the place that mankind has gazed at since the dawn of human time. Yes, it was a competition with the USSR not Russia, and a good one, we can't stay on earth forever
Earth won't be here forever, besides it is human nature to go way beyond the unknown. We need frontiers, the human race would stagnate without that adventurous nature.

Actually, some people say that NO BODY has ever touched down on Moon. It was just too risky to even reach there at that time. Only to go ahead from Soviets, USA did this drama.
