Can provide personal story, though.
When I was in my senior year, I was very introverted and would spend very little time with friends. The only social outlet was dating my girlfriend. When I was looking at college, my parents told me that I had to pick a college at least three hours' travel away as they didn't want me coming home every weekend. They did this as a means of getting me out and becoming more social.
They provided a lot of help in enabling me to get housing, financial aid and transportation at the college. It was definitely the thing I needed to get me out and about.
