Air is taken in, compressed, ignited and then released. The pistons are set in a row or off-set and the spark-plugs are fired in a controlled order to maximize power during the ignition phase. Air is released, and the process starts all over again.

1. suck in gasoline and air mixture
2. compress it
3. throw in a spark to burn it, making power
4. send the byproducts of the burn out the tail pipe
