Equal rights for women is a relatively new idea in the US. Women did not necesarily have the right to vote until the Nineteenth Amendment was adopted in 1920. A woman was a candidate for Vice President on a major party ticket some years back; had that party been elected, and the president subsequently died, she would have become President. It may happen in the foreseeable future.

Because even with all of the laws and ammendments promising us equal rights, there's still too many stereotypes and narrow-minded biases that undermine people's confidence in how a woman would handle things such as threat of war or an international crisis.

Besides, since our world, and especially politics are primarily run by men, the groups who choose the candidates for the political parties are also probably mostly men, men who either believe the stereotypes or who know odds are that a female candidate wouldn't win, so they don't put one on the ticket.

Actually, women don't have equal rights to men. That's what the Equal Rights Amendment was all about (which didn't pass).

There are many women in high positions in politics; however, I believe people don't trust that a woman could handle the job of being president, for whatever ridiculous reasons they justify that opinion with.

Opportunities are gradually opening that were not there before. It takes years to establish a power base to attempt the Presidency.
America does not need a woman President. We need a competent leader. If that person happens to be female then so be it. There is a difference between the two situations.

OH YE OF LITTLE FAITH(not religious faith obviously!)

The time is ripe for a female to take over but do not expect anything different when she does! What most regular people outside the study of Political Science do not seem to realize is that while yes, the president is powerful, he/she still has to answer too a large group of people!

This ineveitably means that the same result will come from the pressure of the same people! POWER PLAYERS!!

There is a natural process of elimination on the way up through the corridors of power. One eliminator may be that women generally have familes and can not be as single minded as men with regard to political ambition. Conversely, men have their wives to support them on their way up the ladder. Another reason is that men , although they may say differently in public, still historically think that women are not as clever as men (sad but true) We had a Prime Minister over here(Maragaret Thatcher) who proved to be as good if not better than many of our previous Prime Ministers. I am resigned to think, however, that overall there is no such thing as complete equality - the women like to THINK they have it and the men don't LIKE to think the women have it! Maybe it is something to do with male insecurity?

I love this question. Women have 55% of the vote in this country and want to know why women don't get elected. Next election leave the mall, get out of the tanning salon, skip your pedicure, and VOTE, CAMPAIGN, VOLUNTEER, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! Compared to the choices we have had in the last 20 or more years I would be happy to vote for a Chia pet if they had integrity and a realistic platform. And ladies by platform, I wasn't referring to shoes.

It takes time and the "rich white man" is becoming a thing of the past in the sense that he is the only one to lead. When I was younger the only choice we had when voting was between two white men. Those days are gone forever and that's better for all of us.
