I say cracking the knuckles does not contribute to or cause arthritis, but my boyfriend says it does. Who is right? Does cracking the knuckles do any harm at all?

Yes, it's just an old wive's tail. Cracking your knuckles only releases pressure that has built up for whatever reason. Most often it's air or something harmless like that.

A lot of people were taught when they were little that it caused arthritis just so they would not build a habit of popping joints. But in actuality it causes no harm.

A single event is not enough to cause damage to the joint, although it is possible that prolonged joint stress due to cracking knuckles may eventually lead to a higher risk of joint damage. The long-term consequences of this practice have not been studied thoroughly, and the scientific evidence is inconclusive. However, the common parental advice "Cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis" may be simply a device to deter children from this practice, which many people find annoying because of the sound it makes. In fact, a study by Castellanos and Axelrod found that arthritis was not a product of knuckle cracking. They evaluated 300 consecutive outpatients at Mount Carmel Mercy Hospital to determine whether habitual knuckle cracking is a risk factor for hand dysfunction. They found no relation with osteoarthritis, but noted that 'knuckle crackers were more likely to have hand swelling and lower grip strength.'

Wives don't have tails, at least most don't. Dogs, pigs and horses have tails. Some have short or bobbed tails, but they still have tails. I think the whole thing about old wives having tails is just an urban legend. It's really just a myth or a tale that people tell. But I could be wrong. Some wives may really have tails like the guy in the movie Shallow Hal had a tail. I really don't see what cracking your knuckles has to do with wives having tails though. I think your boyfriend just made that up.

cracking your knuckles has been linked to the brakedown of cartilage in the knuckle which has been blamed for arthritis. However I have seen people with arthritis who didn't crack their knuckles and I have seen people would did not have it. Is there decisive evidence either way, no. So you both are for now.

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.

If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.

Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.

And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.

I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.

It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.

Today, I want to do the same for you!

I'm 33... I've been cracking my thumb knuckles since I was about 10... I haven't gotten arthritis yet. My mom has arthritis & I never heard her crack her knuckes, ever. I really don't think the two are related.

Cracking knuckles causes arthritis.
False. However, habitual knuckle cracking tends to cause hand swelling, decreased grip strength, and can result in functional hand impairment.

Yes, it is bad, cracking the knuckles. Everytime you crack your knuckles there is a release of pressure from in between the joints, this cracking is a result of the liquid that is in between each one. Everytime you crack your knuckles, you take up a small amount of it. It basically disappears. This liquid is good for lubrication so that the joints dont have too much friction, but after so much cracking and old age, the liquid disappears and thus a person gets arthritis. Its not good, to crack your knuckles.

you are. Its built up carbon dioxide gas in the knuckles that make that sound. It will not cause arthritis, it may cause other problems later in life. Sore joints, especially if your double jointed. Trust me on this one, I'm a knuckle cracker.

No, it doesn't cause arthiritis. If anything, all it does is snap your bones back into place, really. It may cause your knuckles to swell up some, but it doesn't cause arthritis.
