Seriously, have any of you ever been 'at the top', so to speak?

Define 'at the top' as you understand it to mean. And if any of you have been 'at the top' is it all that lonely?

Just wondering.

I have not been to the top, however, I too have heard that it is lonely there. I do think that I know why it is lonely though. It is because very few make it up there to the top and that it is why it is so lonely. All things have a cost (even good things) so this is the price to pay for being on top.

Also just as a side note, if you hear the phrase "at the top" at first it sounds like a great and positive thing. Once you think about it a little more, however, you can detect a slight dark side. To me at least when I hear it I think of a mountain or pyramid. So to be on top will mean that you will have to be on top of something and in some cases people will even walk over others just to be on top.

Instead of to be "at the top" the phrase "stand tall" or "walk with your head up" sounds much more independent. "At the top" sounds like you had to crush the others to get there which is most likely why its so lonely.

I've been Valedictorian at my HS. And yet it is lonely. Few people are as smart as you and you see the world in a different way. Thus you can't have a decent discussion about many things with most people.

It's only lonely "at the top" when you have knocked everyone else down to get there.

some of the people want to see you in in the bottom because people is egocentric and they want to be the best, but when they see you at the top, they're jealous sometimes, and they want to be around you to take advantage when you find out this you decide to be by yourself. To have more people around you, you have to be very humble.
