the highest I.Q. ever recorded was to Marilyn vos Savant, an American writer, in 1946. She scored 228. Einstein never took an I.Q. test but scientists estimate its between 160 and 180 on a 200 scale.

Intelligence is largely the exercise in perception and interpretation, then application of knowledge. 'Recorded in History' leaves a lot of ground open, whose history, etc. I'd say given the level of general knowledge available at the times involved, we'd have a toss-up between Pythagoras and Aristotle within the bounds of recorded history - for purely practical and political achivements. They both could be considered towering intellects. More recently, indeed Einstein, and Hawking, although it is difficult to say you could 'measure' what most can barely comprehend. What about the unnamed priests of the Mayan culture - who independantly derived an elaborate calendric system that is accurate to this day? Mensa - BAH!
