It helps you solve differential equations which would otherwise take a whole lot of work to solve.

Someone has to write the software, now don't they? And to discover new things, you need to be familiar with the details of the fundamental ideas. So while you can get software to do it for you, it's vital to be at least understand how to do it without the software.

It is a mapping of Real space onto itself that allows you get a diff. eq. into integrable form. Think of it like the eqs. in geometry whereby you performed a translation or rotation of the axis.
