Political: One political group uses a group as an escape goat for their problems.

Social: People are taught and/or influenced to believe hate speech.

Economic: One group is blamed for another group's economic short-comings.

Religious: Conflicting views of religious symbols & passages.

In animals, it's an inbred territorial instinct. In humans it's competition for the best food, mates, jobs and property. In other words, quality of existence. Politics and religion add to this stress, sectioning individuals into unjustly believing that they are superior because of their prejudices.
