sure but we may not live long enough to see it

Only under certain conditions. If life and our civilization continue to exist as they do today, flying cars would, if we one day develop mechanical means to make them as good as our very mature car technology which we have today, offer the advantage of being able to travel regardless of traffic congestion, and on multiple levels. That would be one major plus point. But we would need all of the following: A power source capable of delivering the necessary thrust for a vehicle with an approximate weight of 1500kg, ideally reliably, and without using fossil fuels. Also, they will need to be entirely silent - can you imagine New York with one million jet-engine-driven vehicles humming through it? It ould be decibel-madness. So, we would need something far superior to the old dinosaur jets engines we use today. Anti-gravity drives would be called for, with an apprpriate energy supply, possibly derived from cold fusion or (if they indeed exist, and if they do give enough mpf) tachyons. We would also need superior, automated guidance systems for these vehicles, as the carnage would be apocalyptic if any of these ever crashed in dense traffic in the skies (ever seen "The Fifth Element"? We're talking that kind of traffic). Now here comes condition two: If our society does experience some sort of apocalyptic desaster, and needs to rebuild civilization with few people, but for some reason has insight into advanced technology (I believe that we could be building the vehicles described above today - it's just that the patents are in somebody's drawer at Esso or Shell...), we would be better off using flying craft, as the rebuilding of a road network would be far more work than the introduction of flying craft to whoever reckons to need one. To bring this to an end: No, I don't believe we'll see these vehicles. And that's because our civilization won't just self-annihilate (we're far too badly organized to even make that happen), and because the necessary technology for it will be kept secret by all lobbies who have an interest in keeping things as they are (ever remember the outcry from the car industry when they introduced catalysts? Now imagine abolishing the automobile altogether - good heavens, it would be indescribable), and because the wheel still is the most energy-efficient basic facilitator of motion in the universe outside of the realm of airless voids. I hope to have answered your question.

There's a thing called "Flare-craft" that comes pretty close. It starts out on water or snow and after a certain speed it rises up a few feet and rides on the "ground effect".
