If you find a Harley you like go to www.kbb.com and look up the year and model. It will give you a starting place for the price. Extra chrome, modified engine can add a lot to the price. Take some one with you who knows bikes or you could end up paying more in repairs than you paid for the bike. Some do it yourself mechanics are not that careful about using lok-tite on bolts and things come loose. Some after market parts look good but don't hold up as well as genuine Harley parts. A good place to go is a swap meet. Ask around for someone who can build and repair bikes. Swap meet folks know each other fairly well and should give you straight info.
A panhead engine or evolution would be my recommendation if you are a first time buyer of Harleys.

With an older Harley you may find a 1960 engine in a 1968 frame or a 1957 engine in a 1948 frame. Because of their never ending value there are bikes from the 1940's still being ridden. Be warned, the brakes on some older Harleys were not the best. Look for upgraded brakes on whatever you buy. Also, bikes with long extended front ends may look cool, but they don't handle that well.
Some older Harleys bring prices close to a new one. Ask to see the title, be certain the numbers on the bike match the numbers on the title. Write down the id numbers and call police to be certain it isn't stolen. You could have it impounded with no way to get your money back. Tell the owner you want the number to give to your insurance agent to check for coverage so they don't know you might check it with police.
Best of luck
