This is a BIG question... Find out the following:
1. What is your CPU speed?
2. how much RAM do you have?
3. How big is your hard drive?
4. Do you have a CDROM?
Take all of the answers to these questions and look at the Minimum requirements for WinXP. IF you have a better system than what it states it needs, You can upgrade.
If you PC is old enough to have Win98, it would be a 'Legacy' system... AKA OLD. Yes you can upgrade, but the hardware you have might limit you - Even make things Slower. Its important to check what you have.
To do the upgrade, Back up ALL your files. Understand Most applications that Run on XP are New - so you must be willing to upgrade things like MSWord, Excel etc.
You will need to Format your hard drive as Win98 uses Fat32 for its File system and WinXP uses NTFS.
IF you upgrade, you will get the install CD. You can place this CD into your CDROM drive and Boot off it. You will see an option Just after your BIOS Posts that says
"Press any key to boot from CD..." Press ANY RANDOM key within the 5 seconds or you will need to restart and await for that msg again.
Once it starts to load off the CD, you will need to Press F6 if you need to install RAID Drivers. Again, You are on Win98? You Prolly Dont need to use this.
The Installer will load all files and you will see on the bottom of the screen step by step instructions.
Press 'Enter' to install WinXP.
Press F8 to agree to the terms/conditions of the install
Select the destination Hard drive.
Format the drive using NTFS. DO NOT USE THE QUICK FORMAT YOU WILL REGRET IT.
KEEP IN MIND - Format = LOOSE ALL DATA. This is gonna happen and is Why you Backed everything up to start.
Once format is done, The installer will install the new OS.
Follow the steps, enter your LEGIT key when asked, and PLEASE - Download all the updates that you can. We dont need another box online waiting to be hacked.

You're better off doing a clean reinstall. Backup all your important files, format the drive, then install XP from scratch and reinstall all your programs and files. It's worth it. Also, make sure your computer can run XP comfortably. If it's 500MHz and 128MB RAM or under then don't even bother. It'll run slower than 98.
BTW, you can probably still use 98 with your cable internet. You just have to be more resourceful and not used the bundled programs that they want you to use.

Your question really does not make a whole lot of sense, your cable company or internet providor has nothing to do at all with the version of windows you are running, and if you are using a computer that came with 98 on it, it might not even be powerful enough to run XP. if anything, that might make it run even slower.

What it sounds like he is saying, is that the software the cable company uses on their modems requires XP, although I find that hard to believe. And yes, installing windows XP will reformat your hard drive and remove windows 98, so backup anything important.

If you've all ready upgraded to Windows XP, then Windows 98 should be gone. If you are using a dual-boot system, then you may be in a different situation. If you are using a dual-boot system please let us know.
