Maybe you should have taken more interest in his interest if you wanted to keep the relationship going.Obviously you didn't so he dumped you..simple..and I don't blame him.
I like football and I would dump a girl if she wasn't interested in the game,or at least tried to show some kind of interest ,but obviously you didn't even attempt to try,so why should he. ?
Why should he waste his time with a girl who shows no attempt to try and show some interest in his interest or hobbies. Maybe he thinks that you lack any intellectual skills,or not smart enough for him ,did you ever think of that ?
I am not trying to be mean ,but I think that this needed to be pointed out to you..and for you not just to hear the standard bullshit answer of taking your side on the issue.
If you want this guy back, maybe you should try and show some interest in his likings and not condemn him because he likes something you don't.

So what?

Were you going to marry him?

Move on. Find another boy that you share the same hatred for chess.

sound like he got hit in the head one to many times with a chess board, that is a very poor reason to break up with someone, you are more likely better off without someone like that,

He is childish and ignorant to break up with someone over an interest in some game.

My passion is skiing, and yes I would break up with my gf if she couldn't understand that. If chess was his superpassion and you kept trying to pull him away from it, I can understand his reasoning.

i don't think that's the real reason he broke up with you, that is a huge bullshit reason and i assume he was really desperate when looking for reasons to dump you. maybe that's a sign that you were a good girlfriend.

Be a queen, not a pawn. Show him you can play and seize his bishop before he makes his next move. It's not too late. ;)
