it means you can pick your own hours if they add up to the right amount of hours a day
like 9-5 or 8-4

Most of the time when an employeer list flexible hours they are looking for someone who can work flexible hours. Most are looking for someone who can work what are called split shifts. They want you to work 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. Also they may require you to work weekends or be on call. I work at a job where flexible hours means I need to be available 24 hours a day just incase I am needed to fill in or an emergency.

I offer flexible hours. What I do, if you have a day down the road that you want to take off, but don't have vacation or personal time to cover it, work a couple of hours here and there and when you have 8 hours, take the day off you want without penalty.

Also if there is a project that I would not demand, but would appreciate if you worked an hour of overtime, you could come to the office an hour later, or leave an hour earlier, or could be paid overtime.

It is the choice in that area: if project requires more time, either overtime, or your choice take the time off.

The other answers here give different choices - flex hours mean this to me. Why not ask?

It sounds more like they have flexible hours for you unless otherwise stated. This position may work on shift basis.. for example day shift could be 8am to 3pm, 3pm to 10pm and 10pm and so forth. Depending on the position maybe you can set your own schedule as long as you make up a certain amount of hours per week. Yeah judging from what you wrote it sounds like they have flexible hours for you. Good luck in the Job Hunt :)

It means that they are requiring you to work in flexible hours not like the normal 8 to 5 working hours routine.

Normally flexible hours job are those like telemarketing, outdoor sales, projects, survey.. It means that u can work according to your time slot and maybe from 2-6pm or 11-4pm.. Blablabla..
Well it's better to call the contact person and ask for details, so u will decide whether the job is suitable to u or not, remember ask what is the minimum required working hrs and how they are going to pay u

Where I work this means you can on some days work over your normal hours and then use the credit built up from the over hour you've done to leave early or take a longer lunch. It's very useful, I'd ask them on how their individual one works as terms and conditions will apply. Good luck

They may offer a split shift, say you come in at 8-12 go home and come back 5-9. Or maybe just part time and full time hours available.
