Depends on your local city/county regulations.
In California, you are technically responsible for your tree (it's your tree) and you could be cited for a nuisance.
But at the same time, the law allows your neighbor to trim overhanging branches on his side of the property line - as long as it doesn't injure the tree.
Some tree folks say that's less than 1/3 of the branches and foliage, but I think 1/3 is too much at one time. I would only go 20-25% max.
Back to your question: if you trim your own tree, then you will make sure it's done right and so the tree lives well. I would not assume my neighbor looks out for my interests and my tree, unless he/she hires a certified arborist.

If you are a decent neighbor, you should. Usually the law allows
property owners to cut any branches that hang over their
property line, which could leave your tree looking lop-sided.
So it would be in your best interests and help you keep a
good relationship with your neighbor to have your tree
trimmed by a professional to keep it healthy and looking good.

The tree belongs to you, it is messing up your neighbors yard...be a good neighbor and volunteer to prune the tree. Would you want someone elses tree debris in your yard? I wouldn't.

it is your tree and your responsibility, the preferred method is to prune before it gets out of hand and ruins a good neighborly attitude. but now the way to handle this is to ask your neighbor if he would like you to prune the tree and at the time maybe he or she would assist you thereby rebuilding the good neighbor feelings and showing some class at the same time..

I had a neighbor like you 1 time and his tree would "sap" all over my '62 ford pickup truck with a flat bed ....i asked him many times to trim it...but he was nasty.....soooo...i waited until HALLOWEEN and the tree was full of dry leaves....and dry leaves on the ground...i made a concoction of dry washing powder and gasoline( homemade napalm)....well, i think u get the picture.....aaargghhhh aaargghhh...after the tree burnt down it took the house with it...I really did not know he did not have insurance...so,they leveled the lot and i got a nice garden for my BUTTERBEANS and OKRA to grow on. I know you think I over reacted...but , now my wife minds me better when i tell her to do things..aaaaarrghhhh..aaarrghhhh

Yes, yes you are ,it's the right thing to do. After all it is your tree
and wouldn't you want them to do the same if it were their tree?
So yes please do trim your tree. Set a few hours aside and trim that tree, your neighbor's will hopefully thank you.Well happy trimming .

No. But any limbs that hang over their yard they have the right to remove themselves if they want.
