IS there anything harmful in products such as advantage? I mean, does this cause a dogs life expectancy to be less, or perhaps cause cancer? This was just a strange question I had always wondered? Why can't they use it on humans? I find products like these kind of interesting and would love to learn what makes them work...yeah..I guess I am weird=)

It is because their liver processes it differently than a human's does. It would cause serious health problems for a human, and quite possibly death. However, in the animal it is prescribed for, it does not harm them at all.

To start with the dosage is based on body weight and you probably weigh more than your cat or dog. Also different species metabolize the chemicals differently. I know that many products which are labled for dogs will kill cats- they are much more sensitive to chemicals. Someone told me she knew a vet once who did apply a flea control product for dogs to himself once- but the vet probably had a reasonable idea of appropriate dose for humans.

humans don't usually have flea or tick problems so there is no need to use such products.

Well, if you want to stick it in your hair, no one's gonna stop you. Probably would prevent head lice and crabs if you're worried about it - just don't shower.
