It would be nice if he would sit still and let some of his fans hear some things about him. His new movie looks like it will be good and he is playing a more serious part.

You know, most of the others here have it covered:

He did get his start in stand-up comedy, and his whole act was that he was just plain *daffy*, as in the cartoon, minus the *duck parts* as it were. And yeah, he still does the occasional bit of stand-up comedy and as successful as he has been, expecting him to not be the oddball is rather like expecting Bill Cosby to not be this sort of droll, dignified old fart that he's been playing since he was a *young* man...

Either way, with either actor, it just doesn't work. After so many years of doing their thing, and doing it well, it not only becomes expected, but a part of the public personality people think of when they see the person.

But...it needs to be said, the whole "daffy" thing doesn't age so well. Which is the whole entire reason why Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler *have* careers....not so much because they are as good as Robin Williams (one is, one isn't, pick 'em yourself), but because they are *younger*.

This is likely the reason why the Asker had a conniption. The person had likely not seen a 50+ year old man jump around and act nine kinds of loony before, and for folks who don't know Robin Williams from anything *but* his serious work it can be jarring. You'd think he'd have an "off" switch to his obnoxious machine or something right...? ;)

Well, he doesn't and he's *admitted this* years ago, back when he was a young man on a TV show called _Mork and Mindy_, you know, back when he *was* funny 100% of the time with that schtick, that thing he does....

Because he is shy, always has been. Pity he didn't get bitten by a radioactive spider or something, maybe that energy might have been put to better use....nah....*lol* :)

Do you want him to only to put on a show even when he is not before the camera? Moreover his personality in front of the camera is dictated by the director and the author. He has to toe the line whatever may be his personal opinion in the matter. His role before the interviewer is not stage-managed(we hope). He tries to be himself and some of his irrepressible personality which has won accolades may sometimes spill over. If he were to sit with a long face before the TV camera and reply to the queries in measured, artificially serious tone the intervew would be a washout.A whisperer tells me that the industry would like him to rehearse his interview to make it look more mature etc. but he has pointblank refused,"No Sir, I am dancing to y our tunes on the stage but let me, for a change, sing my own,it may be a lullaby, here." Next time you witness his interview use some empathy.

Many times when a person uses comedy, it is a covering for something else.He does play serious roles. I saw him in a movie with Cuba Gooding, I cant remember the name but he was fantastic. He is one of my favorites The movie with Cuba Gooding was What Dreams Become.. That was really emotional

I've met him a bunch of times in San Francisco. He lived near my high school. He's a really nice guy and not all stupid when you talk to him. I don't like his schtick either, but that's what people expect of him, I guess. He's been doing the same material since the 70s.

I like his acting though.

Robin Williams is just being Robin Williams. His nature is hyper active speed talks and jokes

In the late 70's and early 80's he has admitted to doing a lot of coke. I'm not sure what is wrong with him now but you'll notice when he is intervied in front of his children he is way more normal. I'm not sure if that means anything. It's just an observation.

Robyn is from San Francisco, south of Market street. We used to hand together doing gigs at mostly gay comedy clubs. We discovered DIVINE in 1968 doing burlesque at the
Bijouo and she was so so so gorgeous (without the xtra 300 lbs).

Maybe he is shy, and does not do well when speaking in public, but he really enjoy being a comedian, he may still be working on becoming more calm when speaking in public, and he suffers from a bi-polar disorder.

I agree. I think that he has enormous talent. I think that he knows that alot of people expect him to be over the top, and alot of his fans like how he acts. I just think that he could relax. it would suck to have to jump through hoops all of the time just because you thought that people expected it of you. Jim Carrey is the same way.
