Open the cover and see if there's a name in it. If there isn't, return it to where you found it, and maybe the owner will come back for it. If this isn't possible, just throw the diary away, and certainly don't read it. When I was 14 some girls stole my diary and read it, and I was so tramatized that I haven't been able to keep a diary since. Please don't do this to anyone.

most of the time a good user will have their name on the inside flap, it will contain the persons name at least, but don't read the bloody thing it may be something you don't wanna know or may have information of a sensitive(ie not for public comsumption), and the person may take offense to someone reading it.
you may not want to opent then can of worms you hold in your hand.
so tread lightly and just use some common sense, if there's no name in it then you probably won't figure out who's it is form reading it.

If I found a diary, no matter whose it is, I'd read it, I'm just telling the truth here, I won't go on and say no don't do it, it's bad. It is bad but you just can't help it now can you? I know I wouldn't be able to. Just do it if you're like me, and if you're not like me-then don't do it. Hehe. : D
