Social Security and medicare will not help with a short term disability. For SS disability, the disability would have to last at least 1 year, and make the person unable to do any meaningful work. Medicare doesn't kick in until 2 years after the disability onset date, as determined by Social Security.

Some states offer short-term disability benefits to their residents, but most don't. Your best bet would be to see if your employer offers any kind of short term disability.

The other option might be to go on food stamps and welfare for the short term if you need assistance.

This depends on where you live. If you live in a no fault state, you may have limited rights to sue, but *do* have rights to certain benefits, such as income replacement, medical, rehabilitation and vocational benefits. Consult a lawyer who works specifically in the area of personal injury and you should get your answer.
