Several years ago (1996), we were driving down to North Carolina to visit some relatives. We took the scenic drive through Shenandoah in Virginia on the way down.

About quarter way into the drive we stopped at the Visitors Center to take a look around. In the parking lot was alot of media vans for local television stations (NBC Roanoke, CBS Richmond ect). There was also alot of police cars and big canvas tents set up. Well anyways we looked around and then set off again along the scenic drive.

Just 15 minutes after we left the Visitors Center traffic slowed down near a camp ground area and hikeing area with a parking lot at the entrance. In the parking lot was thousands of police cars, and the entire site was blocked off with yellow police tape. Lot's of people had stopped at the side of the road to see what was going on.

We never did find out what it was or what happened but it seemed like a big thing. Does anyone have information on this?
