Sexual abuse towards children is horribly underreported. One of the reasons, which really shouldn't be the case, is that DSS and CPS case workers do not have the capacity/willingness to follow through with all reports of abuse.
In fact, I've seen DSS workers neglect to investigate claims of abuse towards children simply because they do not want to disarm themselves of their firearms, which in my state is a requirement when entering a child-based unit. These kids have very clear physical and emotional signs of abuse, yet the people responsible for their safety and well-being turn their backs on them, leaving their case of abuse unverified and therefore unreported.

I agree with everyone else's answers...the actual numbers of unreported abuse would be appalling. I was abused as a child and never said anything to anyone until I was an adult when I mentioned in to my therapist and to my now husband...but I'd never told a soul. It was not something I thought I could tell anyone and I didn't know how to tell anyone anyway, so I just said nothing. Did it really mess up my whole life? No I don't think so. Did it maybe change the way I viewed some sexual choices I made at too young an age (an inappropriate age I might add), yes probably)....but I'm grown up now and I've learned to deal with it.
Others are not so lucky.

I honestly believe that 98-99% of us have been a victim of a sexual crime at one point in our lives. I think that a very small number of victims admit to being a victim even when directly questioned. I also think that a lot of the victims don't remember concisely that they were a victim.
I just wish I knew how to protect my son with out having to be constantly with him.
I think that 99% of men could easily commit a sex crime if they don't control themselves and a high percentage of women are like this as well.
I guess the biggest question is why do so many people choose not to control themselves.

Molestation of young people is an epidemic around the world, and it kills the souls of its victims. I saw a study on women prisoners, and over 90% of the female inmates surveyed had been sexually abused as children. I wouldn't be surprised if it was that high for male inmates too. We owe it to every human being on this planet to do everything we can to stop the abuse of children. They are our future.

Logic and experience lead me to deduce that the numbers of "unreported" and "undocumented" molestation is very very large.
The more you get around in the world, the more disenchanted you may become with the depravity and utter evil that men and women can wreak.

Way too common. The act produces incapacitating fear. We need toteach our children not to be nice or good in situations like this.
