Document what you saw and when. Contact the police. Also, you can contact child protective services.

I would be very concerned. I would talk to my child and see what kind of story he had about it, and based on my knowledge of his ability to recount events truthfully I would take his story into account as I went back to the day care and asked if they could explain the situation. The fact is that most kids are inclined to tell the truth, if they don't think they will get in trouble for it. So I would at least consider his version. Whether or not the daycare had an explanation that could justify the bruising in any way, I would not take my child back. And you would have to consider reporting them as well.

File a police report but explain that you want to find out first what is going on yet want documentation if the child was spanked too hard...take pictures. If you just realized it tonight, call the daycare provider and meet with them in the AM.

Call the police. Take pictures of the bruises. Find out who was working at the day care that day. Ask other parents if their "older" children witnessed any misbehavior toward your child. It is important that you gather your evidence! The police will launch an investigation..but make sure you do to!!

If it is obvious, then what are you waiting for? You need to find a new place fro the child and follow up with the old care giver: complaint, sue, whatever. You didn't say how old the child.

Take him to a doctor's first. Then go with my lawyer to the day care, to set things right. And of course, never take my child to that place again.
